Spring 2008 meeting of West District
The Spring meeting of West District was held at Stephenville from May 30 to June 1, 2008 with the sessions and meals taking place at the local Lion’s Club. Memorial United Church was represented by Rev. Crooks, Ray Penney, Ralph Angel and Garfield Roberts.
The theme “Moving from lament to hope”, which was introduced at the 2007 Fall meeting, was continued by Rev Bill Steadman from the Stewardship Department of General Council. Many of the delegates realized that our laments are really complaints; not a feeling of hopelessness while our hope is merely wishful thinking instead of looking to the future with faith.
A major concern at the meeting was the shortage of Clergy. Several small charges have no minister and not enough are being ordained to meet the demand. The report from The Atlantic School of Theology showed that they need to graduate 130 to 150 each year to meet the needs of congregations while the average number graduating is 40 to 50.
Many charges were asked to relate good news stories and many told of lay people keeping the church open for extended periods until a Minister was found. Our presentation was a collection of stories and slides of congregational activities over the past year as well as singing a song, written by Alice Cater, concerning our strategic planning.
The Mission and Service Fund is still an important topic of discussion. While contributions in 2007 amounted to $733786, there was $695113 returned in the form of grants etc. Many smaller charges depend on grants from this fund to pay their clergy.
The lack of camping at Loon Bay was a topic of concern. West Haven camp is doing really well with many of the categories full. There may be some room for campers who want to attend but space is limited.
At the closing banquet on Saturday evening three people were honoured: Rev James Hoddinot for 45 years of service, Rev. Sidney Newbury, for 30 years of service; and Ray Clouter, on his retirement. A video message from the Moderator was played and a short video clip was made to wish Rev. Bill Bartlett a speedy recovery from his illness.
At the Sunday morning worship, Rev Kathy Brett was installed as Conference President in place of retiring Elsie Pottle. There was one person ordained at this service: Rev Bruce Rideout.
