It is now almost six years since the Rev. Royden and Jeanette Reynolds ‘chose’ to become members of our church family. Memorial United Church has certainly been blessed since they made that choice. Rev. Royden has shared his wisdom, knowledge, guidance, time and sense of humor with this church family whenever the need arose.  Although retired, his commitment to his ministry is always tremendously strong.

Rev. Royden was born in Salmon Cove, Carbonear where he graduated from high school in 1954 and then taught school for three years.  He became a candidate for ministry in 1957.  He attended Memorial College in St. John’s,  Mount Allison University, Sackville, N.B.,  St. Andrews College in Saskatoon, and the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax.  He served pastoral charges in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Quebec. He served several charges in Newfoundland & Labrador such as Clarenville, Glovertown, Carbonear, First United in Mount Pearl, and Gower Street United, St. John’s.

Rev. Royden has served as chairperson of just about every division and committee of Conference and Presbytery. He was chairperson of the Avalon Presbytery; President of the Newfoundland & Labrador Conference; Commissioner to General Council; Chairperson of the Conference Settlement Committee; and for four years as the church’s representative on the Integrated Education Council as well as the Canadian Council of Churches.  Rev. Royden retired in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

There will probably be another retirement in Rev. Royden’s future. Just recently, he accepted an appointment with Memorial United Church as Minister of Visitation.  He is available to visit sick and shut-in members of our congregation, or anyone who would appreciate a visit for any reason. Congregational visitation is a role he has always felt was a most important part of his Ministry.

Through a recommendation of Session, the honorary title of ‘Minister Emeritus’ was bestowed upon Rev. Royden on Sunday, May 18, 2008.  This honorary position is conferred on ministers who have served for many years and are retired from active ministry. This gives Rev. Royden all clergy right and privileges within our church as when he was working.

We wish to express our deep gratitude to Rev. Royden and Jeanette for their presence with us, their friendship, his ministry among us and his wonderful sense of humor. Your presence at Memorial United Church has made us a much stronger church family.
