Church Life
Our “In Memoriam” service had its beginnings in 1989 when the Junior Choir, under the direction of Maxine Stanley, wanted to do something special to help with the building fund for the new church. The first In-Memoriam Service was such a success it has become an annual event.
Our latest service was held on Sunday, May 4, 2008. During this service, our Church Choir and Men’s Choir, the UC5 guitar group and soloists sang anthems requested by individuals in memory of loved ones.
Through the participation of the congregation and friends who are away, this project makes a generous donation to the building fund each year. This year $7,917.00 was raised.
The first issue of "Connexions" was circulated to our church members in early 2006 with future editions planned for approximately every quarter. The newsletters highlight individuals from the congregation (young or old) and give a brief history of their involvement in the church and community. Besides a message from the minister, there are other newsy items and announcements, and reports from the UCW and Sunday School.
The December 06 and May 07 edition carry an interesting history (Part 1 and Part 2) of Reverend Garland G. Lacey, a minister who went out from Memorial United and pastored churches in Canada and the United States. The conclusion to this history can be found in the December 2007 issue. See the link above for the combined history of Rev. Lacey.
See the Link to the right to access a particular issue.
In 2006 the Centennial Committee initiated the establishment of Recognition Pins. This came about as a result of congregational members, committees and groups expressing a desire to appropriately recognize individuals for their work in the church, which often extends to the community. The criteria for recognition and presentation is based on a nomination from a church group or individual to the Official Board.
Memorial United has a very active UCW group with a membership of 80 women in 4 units. Visit the UCW page from this link.
Sunday School takes place every Sunday morning at approximately 11:15 a.m. during the regular school year, closing for the summer holidays and a short break during Christmas.
Registration for Sunday School for 2007-08 was very successful with approximately 50 young people registered. If you missed registration you can accompany your child to the CE Center and see Christina Osmond, Superintendent.
